Jan 15, 2020

Students need to find a well-paying job sooner than later because of the increased number of graduates. While in high school, students need a plan to settle down by securing a job. To secure a job, you need nothing but an experience. So without any experience, how to obtain experience? And, this is about knowing the purpose of life idea. But there is hope, and that is called an internship.

As a high school student, you still have free time of around 10 – 15 hours a week to put in the efforts and not to mention, you are free the whole summer. So, you can use this time to invest in something useful to make your career better. For that, you need to join an internship program. But not all internships out there are great; you need to find a great one on your own.

Internships are easy to land compared to job interviews as most of them want you to work for them for free. This can help develop your skillset in addition to benefiting the employer. Some internships might lead to full-time jobs, and you can’t miss those as they are the golden ticket to all your desires. There is always a large number of applications for each internship, and you have to stand out of the crowd. This makes you move to the next step but finding a great internship is a big deal.

Here is the list of things you need to do if you want to land up in a great internship.

1. Do Some Research:

This is the most common thing which everyone does before going to attend an interview or applying for an open position in a company. You have to do some background research about the company. Just spending some minutes looking at the company’s website is not going to help you as that is their site and they can give out anything they like to show others. Research also includes learning their products, services, and business as well. It extends to the mark of knowing their competitors and how they are dealing with them.

Interviewers notice the interns who give opinions about their company. In order to have credible and efficient input, students need to put in some time to do the research. By giving opinions, students stand out from the crowd. By doing enough research, you will know about the company in detail.

2. Use their Product / Services:

No one comes to about any product or service unless they use it on their own. This can give practical knowledge of how it is working and what attracts the customers towards them. If you are unfamiliar with the product, services or website, then you won’t really come to know about them.

Most interviewers surely ask this question, “Why you want this internship?”. Students need to answer this question in caution as even if you feel the company is really good, they need to pick you by your reply. You can give out explanations and start telling about your opinions on their products or services. This can give the employer an assurance that you perform well after selected for an internship.

3. Big Picture Thinking:

While researching about the company, try to figure out their business, the individual products and start aligning with what you have to what to want really by doing that internship. You can demonstrate the qualities to the interviewer which you possess with the company. It shows why you are best for the enterprise. Think big, achieve big is the point here, as this can land you up in an internship that you have dreamt of all the time.

4. Hard work beats Grade Point Average:

The student’s passion towards the goal can be easily identified by the employer while showing up in an interview for an internship. This is the thing that every company wants from their candidates, and also they need to work hard to crack the interview and land up in the internship. GPA matters but not to the extent where your passion just beats GPA. For example, if an engineer who builds apps and tools in his/her spare time can be able to develop an application that helps users to practice guitar if his interest solely depends on playing guitar. Of course, your college grades matter, but to a certain extent.

So, highlight your interests in the resume and cover letter, do some research about the company, use their products, and crack the interview to enter the internship. Good luck. Find a great internship by following the things described in detail as this not only helps you in getting an internship but also assist you in choosing the dream career.
