My name is Dean.

I studied Mechanical Engineering at Nelson Mandela University and I am currently working as a Math Tutor at Kip McGrath Education Centre in Newton Park, Port Elizabeth.

I have plenty of experience teaching maths and I am passionate about the subject. My teaching style involves a lot of back-and-forth communication. This is the best way to determine where the gaps in knowledge are and what needs to be focused on in order to improve. I encourage my students to ask a lot of questions. My goal is to help the student understand the operations and terminology in Mathematics. Math is not a subject where you can simply memorize theory in order to pass. It forces you to think and problem solve, which is made a lot easier if the student understands what the question is asking and what they are doing.

I seek to develop understanding. Meaningful math education goes beyond memorizing formulas and procedures. I try to apply the questions or topics to real-life scenarios, which allows the students to better visualize what they are doing. I also regard inquiry-based learning as highly effective. The more questions a student asks, the quicker any uncertainties can be ironed out. Read less
